AbbVie’s experimental cancer drug has won fast-track recognition from United States regulators. The Food and Drug Administration granted two Breakthrough Therapy Designations to telisotuzumab adizutecan, known as Temab-A, on October 7, 2026.
The designations cover colorectal cancer and non-small cell lung cancer, two of the most common and difficult-to-treat solid tumours.
What is Temab-A
Temab-A is a next-generation antibody-drug conjugate that targets a protein called c-Met. It carries a novel chemotherapy payload directly to cancer cells, aiming to kill tumours while sparing healthy tissue.
These are the first Breakthrough Therapy Designations for the drug. AbbVie’s cancer pipeline now holds four such designations in total.
Who could benefit
One designation covers Temab-A combined with bevacizumab for adults with hard-to-treat metastatic colorectal cancer who have already received several standard therapies.
The second covers Temab-A alone for adults with advanced non-squamous lung cancer expressing the c-Met protein, after platinum chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
What breakthrough status means
Breakthrough Therapy Designation speeds up FDA review for drugs showing strong early evidence against serious diseases. It gives companies closer guidance from regulators but does not guarantee approval.
The designations were based on results from the first human study, trial M21-404. AbbVie says the data support c-Met as a meaningful target across multiple tumour types.
Antibody-drug conjugates explained
Antibody-drug conjugates are sometimes called smart bombs. An antibody seeks out a specific protein on cancer cells, then releases a potent chemotherapy drug directly inside the tumour. Healthy cells are largely spared.
The approach has already transformed treatment for some breast cancers and lymphomas. Dozens of similar drugs are now in clinical trials for other tumour types.
AbbVie’s cancer push
AbbVie has invested heavily in oncology as it looks beyond its blockbuster arthritis drug Humira. The company is building a portfolio of targeted therapies and immunotherapies.
With four Breakthrough Therapy Designations now in hand, AbbVie is positioning itself as a serious player in precision cancer medicine. Further trial results are expected in 2027.
Patient groups welcomed the news, noting the urgent need for better options in advanced colorectal and lung cancers. Both diseases still kill hundreds of thousands of people each year worldwide. New targeted therapies offer hope where standard treatments have stopped working.
AbbVie said it will work closely with the FDA to move the programme forward as quickly as possible. Further data from ongoing trials will determine whether the drug earns full approval.
Investors reacted positively to the announcement, with AbbVie shares edging higher. Analysts say the designations validate the company’s growing oncology franchise and could speed the drug’s path to market by a year or more.
