Thailand has approved Bitcoin exchange-traded funds for local investors, while the country’s Securities and Exchange Commission proposed a landmark crypto framework that could make the kingdom one of Asia’s most welcoming jurisdictions for digital assets.
The twin moves signal Thailand’s ambition to position itself as a regional hub for cryptocurrency innovation, even as regulators worldwide grapple with how to oversee the fast-moving sector.
Bitcoin ETFs get the green light
The approval allows Thai asset managers to launch spot Bitcoin ETFs, giving investors regulated exposure to the world’s largest cryptocurrency without the need to hold it directly. The products are expected to attract both retail and institutional demand.
“This is a significant step for Thailand’s capital markets,” said one Bangkok-based fund manager. “Investors have been asking for regulated crypto products, and now they finally have them.”
A landmark framework
Alongside the ETF approval, the SEC unveiled proposals for a comprehensive crypto framework covering licensing for exchanges and custodians, stablecoin rules, investor protection standards, and guidelines for tokenised securities.
The framework aims to balance innovation with safety, drawing on lessons from other jurisdictions while tailoring rules to Thailand’s market. A public consultation will run before final rules are adopted.
Regional race
Thailand’s moves come amid intensifying competition among Asian financial centres to attract crypto businesses. Singapore, Hong Kong, and Dubai have all rolled out licensing regimes, and Thailand is keen not to be left behind.
Industry watchers say clear, sensible regulation could draw exchanges, funds, and startups to Bangkok โ provided the final rules are workable in practice.
“The direction of travel is clear,” the fund manager added. “Thailand wants to be open for crypto business, and doing it properly.”
