The S&P 500 climbed to a fresh record of 7,819 on Tuesday, powered by a handful of AI-linked megacaps — but beneath the headline milestone, market breadth is narrowing in a way that has strategists urging caution.

The index’s advance was driven overwhelmingly by its largest technology constituents, while the average stock lagged well behind. The divergence has revived memories of previous episodes where concentrated leadership preceded bouts of volatility.

AI giants do the heavy lifting

A small cluster of mega-cap technology companies — the primary beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence investment boom — accounted for the lion’s share of the index’s gains. Their combined market value now represents an unprecedented slice of the S&P 500.

“This is a market being carried by a very narrow set of shoulders,” said one equity strategist. “When leadership is this concentrated, the index can look healthy even as most stocks are struggling.”

Breadth deteriorates

Measures of market breadth tell a less rosy story. The number of stocks trading above their long-term moving averages has declined, new 52-week lows are creeping up in rate-sensitive sectors, and equal-weighted versions of the index are badly trailing their cap-weighted counterparts.

Small-caps and cyclical sectors sensitive to interest rates have been particular laggards, weighed down by uncertainty over the Federal Reserve’s policy path.

What history suggests

Strategists note that narrow rallies can persist for extended periods — but that they also tend to end with sharp rotations or corrections when leadership falters. The key question is whether AI-driven earnings growth can broaden out to the rest of the market.

“The bull case is that AI spending eventually lifts all boats,” the strategist added. “The bear case is that we’re looking at a top-heavy market priced for perfection. Either way, the headline record doesn’t tell the whole story.”
